Location, organisation and size
Salamanca University caters for 28,797 students in first
and second cycles (undergraduate students), in 26 Centres
(4 of them affiliated). Subjects corresponding to 88
official degree courses are taught and over 7,000 foreign
students receive courses in Spanish language and culture.
Teaching and research is carried out in 62 departments,
with 2,224 post-graduate students.
The
academic teaching staff numbers 2,461 in total, of whom
1,404 are tenured university lecturers and 1,057 are hired
by contract. In addition, it currently has 332 research
fellows. The University has agreements with over 500
foreign universities as well as with both public and
private institutions, foundations, companies and
corporations.
University centres are distributed throughout different
areas of the city. Some are in the historical centre and
others on the outskirts, but even these are never more
than a 30-minute walk from the city centre.
Climate
The climate is continental with major variations in
seasonal temperatures. The winters are usually cold with
little rain and the summers are hot and dry. Temperatures
in winter range between –5° and 10° C and in summer

Transport
A) How
to get to Salamanca
The usual way of getting to Salamanca is
via
Madrid
(Madrid-Barajas
Airport). There are several options for getting from there
to Salamanca:
BY
COACH/BUS:
The
coach to Salamanca leaves from the “Auto-Res” bus station
at “Conde de Casal”. There are several ways of getting
there from the airport:
1. By
Taxi. This costs approximately €20-25 (the best option
if you have heavy luggage)
2. By
Metro. The metro or underground can be taken from
Barajas Airport. To get to “Conde de Casal Bus Station”
you have to change trains once:
Line 8. From “Barajas
Airport” to “Nuevos Ministerios”.
Line 6. From “Nuevos
Ministerios” to “Conde de Casal”.
The
approximate price of the ticket is €1.15.

There is
a frequent daily coach service between Madrid and
Salamanca. The first leaves at 7 a.m. and the last at
10.30 p.m. (a coach leaves every hour, more or less). The
journey takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes on the
Express Bus (Servicio Exprés in a very comfortable coach
with leather seats (see the company’s website). Price:
€16. We recommend this option.
Another
possibility is the Normal Service (Servicio Normal); the
journey takes 3 hours and the fare is €10.90 (cheaper but
not worth it).

In
Salamanca, you will arrive at the “Salamanca Bus station”.
Once in Salamanca, you can take a taxi from the
coach station or train station to your dormitory or host
family (€4-6).
BY
TRAIN:
The
train to Salamanca leaves from “Chamartín” railway station
in Madrid. There are several ways to get there from the
airport:
1. By

Bank
accounts
It is
easy to open a bank account in one of the many banks in
the city.
You will
need your passport and visa to do this. The appropriate
information can be obtained there.
Public
transport
Prices:
Single ticket: €0.75/journey
Bonobús pass: €0.36/journey
Bus Ciudad pass: €15.65/Month
The Bonobús pass is an electronic card that has to be
bought beforehand at the company’s offices. It costs €2
(just the card) and has to be recharged for a minimum
amount of €5. Recharges can be made at the company’s
offices or on the actual buses themselves.
The use of the Bonobús allows you to make “connections”,
which means that you have 45 minutes from the time you get
onto the first bus to use another city bus free of charge.

Libraries
Each
faculty and many of the departments have their own
dedicated libraries.
Exchange
students will be admitted to University libraries upon
presentation of the student card provided by the
International Relations Office.
Salamanca University libraries have the following opening

There is
seating for a total of 4,405 students in the various

Office
of social affairs
The main
purpose of the Office of Social Affairs at Salamanca
University is to cater for social aspects of the
university community: information, guidance and evaluation
concerning public and private resources and social
services at the university, support for students with
disabilities and participation in programmes of social
action through the Units of Social Work, Assistance for
Students with Disabilities and the University Volunteer
Platform. It consists of the following Units:

Office
of physical education and sports
The
university encourages the practice of sports through its
Office of University Sports, located at the back of the
Colegio Mayor San Bartolomé.
Information on the different activities programmed is
available there; a broad range of sports is covered.

of cultural activities
The
Office of Cultural Activities organises seasons of films,
concerts, theatre, dance, jazz, exhibitions, chamber music
and other activities. These courses, which complement
regular instruction in the Spanish language, will allow
you to approach different aspects of Spanish culture under
the guidance of experts in each one of the fields. All of
these courses are scheduled during the afternoon.

CINEMA |
Screenings of Spanish films are
organized every month. During the months of July and
August, however, you can register for the Spanish
Cinema Course. This independent course is made up of
eight films, for each of which there is a prior
presentation and after-film discussion. You must enrol
in this course in advance. During the rest of the
year, all film screenings are free. |

DANCE |
On this twelve-hour course, you will be
able to learn and practice dancing from the different
Spanish regions. The course places particular emphasis
on flamenco. |

|
GUITAR |
This is a twelve-hour course, and there
are different levels, depending on each student’s
previous knowledge. Students who need a guitar will be
provided with one at the Cursos Internacionales main
office. |

|
|
SONGS |
The goal of this twelve-hour course is
to learn songs from the different Spanish regions. |
|
|
|
|
COOKING |
This six-hour course is divided into
four different sessions, each of which lasts for an
hour and a half. The goal of the course is to enable
students to prepare, and taste, some of the most
representative dishes in Spanish cuisine. |
There is
a wide offer of excursions and guided tours of Salamanca.
Excursions are an ideal way to get to know the different
realities of present-day Spain. Throughout the year,
Cursos Internacionales organizes a variety of excursions
to the most interesting cities in Spain. You can visit
cities like Toledo, Segovia, Ávila, El Escorial, Madrid,
Barcelona, Sevilla, Granada, and others, which are worth
visiting both from an artistic standpoint and also from a
historical point of view.
Declared
“World Heritage City” by the UNESCO and European Cultural
Capital in 2002 by the EU, Salamanca has an extremely rich
cultural heritage to offer its visitors. A stroll through
the city streets reveals masterpieces of all architectural
styles: Roman, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance,
Neoclassical... Yet visitors to Salamanca will find these
historical monuments interspersed with fine examples of
contemporary architecture. During your time in Salamanca
with Cursos Internacionales, you will get to know the
city’s major monuments, including the Old University, the
Cathedrals, both New and Old, the Renaissance Palaces, the
Church of Saint Stephen and the Main Square, amongst many
others. All these visits are free and your guides will be
Cursos Internacionales teachers. During these tours,
students are split up into groups according to their level
of Spanish in order to facilitate each student’s
understanding.

Moreover, each Faculty has its own canteen and although
meals are not served there (except in the Faculties of
Law, Philology and Medicine) they offer a great variety of
