Implementation of an international interdiciplinary program for teaching Gerontology

MASTER’S DEGREE IN GERONTOLOGY

UNIVERSITY OF SALAMANCA

STIPENDS

Each US participating student will receive in his/her country financial assistance to help with language training ($1500) and travel arrangements ($3000) in Europe.

VISA

All those students who are not nationals of European Union countries and who are going to study in Spain for more than three months require a visa.

The International Relations Office at Salamanca University will send the student’s university of origin the Letter of Acceptance the student requires for processing his/her student visa before coming to Spain.

As soon as you receive the Letter of Acceptance, you should take it, together with the rest of the necessary documents, to the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your country of origin or residence to begin the visa process.

According to Spanish law, “The status of the foreigner classified as a student will be that of a visitor and the duration of the authorisation will be the same as that of the course in which he/she is enrolled”, that is “A foreign student in Spain is considered to be a visitor for the purpose of study with no right whatsoever to permanent residence.

INSURANCE

Students from non-EU countries should consult their medical insurance company to find out what procedures they must follow for coverage in Spain, or they can take out private insurance when they arrive.

HOUSING

The Office of International Relations at Salamanca University will help, where possible, to find lodgings. For students on the Intergero project, this university office guarantees accommodation for the first two weeks of the student’s stay prior to them finding somewhere definite to stay. During that time, a student is to look for the type of accommodation that best suits their preferences and needs. Generally speaking, a student may switch from one type of accommodation to another provided that they observe the conditions of the contract. It is important to be well-informed on this matter before reaching a decision on accommodation.

The Master’s in Gerontology will arrange for a Spanish-speaking student who is enrolled on the Master’s to receive and accompany students from the USA during the first days of their stay in Salamanca.

An important part of this accommodation offer, although not all of it, is managed by Salamanca University itself through the University Induction Service (SOU).

The offers of accommodation provided by this service are classified into four sections:

  • Hostels and halls of residence, both belonging to Salamanca University and privately-owned.
  • Flats or apartments to rent.
  • Free rooms in flats or apartments, sharing with other students.
  • Accommodation on a full-board basis (either sharing or not with the person providing it). This offer is provided by more than one official service at the university.

Living with families

One possibility is accommodation with Spanish families (using the service of Cursos Internacionales - International Courses).

Cursos Internacionales can help you arrange a home-stay with a Spanish family.

This service is provided free of charge to those students who request it. Since Cursos Internacionales merely acts as an intermediary between the students and the host family, all payments must be made directly to the families. The main office of Cursos Internacionales will provide you with a set of rules  students are expected to follow during their home-stays.

Family accommodation prices for the year 2006 are as follows:

- Double room (sharing with another student): €16 (per person per day)

- Single room: €17.50 (per person per day)

These prices include room and full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Families will also provide a packed lunch for excursions organized by Cursos Internacionales (International Courses).

For an additional fee, students can also ask their families to provide them with a laundry and ironing service. The price for this service is €11 per week.

University Residences

Salamanca University has six university residences, with a total of 1,137 places, and six university refectories, with a capacity for 1,360 persons.

The university wishes to maintain a diversified offer that will cater not only for the permanent demand for accommodation by students, but also offer room for occasional (accredited) visitors, postgraduates, teachers, administrative staff and guest and visiting lecturers.

The prices of all services offered, as well as details concerning bookings (type of room, location in the city, services included, prices and rules) can be found in the different sections of the site  http://www.usal.es/residen

Nevertheless, students who wish to share a flat or who prefer another type of lodgings can find help at the University Induction Office:

General cost of living in Salamanca

Obviously, normal expenses vary depending on the student’s individual needs and his/her “life-style”.

However, €400 per month would be the minimum required to cover needs such as rent, transport, board and so on.

For example, lodging could cost around €150 per room in a shared flat with other students. Prices are substantially higher in university halls of residence.

LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Spanish courses

Salamanca University offers an intensive course in Spanish to those students from Universities whose agreements with Salamanca University specify such a course. Intergero exchange students are guaranteed the type and length of Spanish course that caters for their needs.

The Office of International Courses will provide students with the necessary information regarding dates, schedules, duration and characteristics of the course. Purely for informative purposes, here you have the detail and structure of our courses for the year (2007). For further information visit: http://cursos.usal.es
