Past and
current projects:
Modifying stereotypes regarding the elderly: analysis of
the change in attitudes
The aim
of this research is to question young people’s attitudes
towards elderly people, analysing stereotypes from a
multidimensional perspective and the effectiveness of an
intervention scheme for changing attitudes within the
context of formal education.
Environmental assessment of contexts in old people
This
research sets out to analyse the environmental aspects
with a bearing on the spatial orientation of elderly
people in everyday settings, proposing an algorithm that
explains conduct in way finding and urban routes.
Extremadura regional network on ageing, SENIOR-EX, based
on New Information Technologies
This
research sets out to develop an intergenerational portal
that will enable professional and affective ties to be
established between young and old entrepreneurs within the
business sphere. The idea is to use new technologies to
explore the potential of retired people’s professional
knowledge and skills in order to achieve satisfactory
ageing.
Qualitative study on beliefs and motivations associated
with the smoking habit in elderly people
The
overriding aim is to analyse, from the perspective of the
elderly people themselves, the beliefs and motivations of
older people with regard to the smoking habit, as well as
the facilitators and barriers regarding a change in that
habit. The following are the specific targets: to discover
how they interpret the definition encountered in each
changing phase in which elderly people find themselves
regarding the consumption of tobacco and, b) to analyse,
from the point of view of elderly people and health
professionals, the determinants of the transition between
changing phases.
Beliefs
and motivations amongst the elderly associated with a
change in diet
The
underlying aim of this study is to explore the motivations
and beliefs in elderly people associated with changing and
keeping to a healthy diet. An overall model is sought that
accounts for adherence to the recommended diet.
Quality
of life and satisfaction in very old people
The
purpose of this study is to identify typical behaviour at
each age, seeing whether this behaviour changes and the
nature of the adaptive function. Furthermore, the aim is
also to identify common behaviour amongst better adapted
individuals. The sample consisted of people over the age
of 75. Data were collated on socio-demographic variables,
physical state of health and assessment, level of
activity, cognitive functioning, affective functioning,
ways of coping, perception of time and autonomy.
Psycho-linguistic treatment for old people with cognitive
deterioration
This
study sets out to validate a multimedia procedure of
cognitive-linguistic stimulation called LECTO in old
people suffering from Alzheimer’s. Likewise, the aim is to
assess the usefulness of this procedure for teaching old
people suffering from Alzheimer’s to read and write and
discover the scope of this treatment in various
cognitive-linguistic variables of special significance in
old people with Alzheimer’s. The application of the
multimedia procedure in old people should help to slow
down the regressive process in those suffering from
Alzheimer’s. This will reveal the learning potential
upheld during the first stages of the illness and will
help to train those reading skills that still remain.
Lecto:
reading as cognitive stimulation
The aim
of this research is to create a method that extensively
addresses the automation of the main strategies required
for learning to read properly and which in turn may
constitute a means or instrument of cognitive stimulation.
The method can be used for teaching children with no
apparent disability to read as well as with those with
learning difficulties. LECTO can also be used for teaching
reading to those elderly people who never learnt to read
or who lost this skill as a result of some degenerative
process affecting the SNc.
Social
needs of elderly people in Salamanca
This
involved a needs study shedding further light on the
elderly population in Salamanca and assessing the services
and programmes designed for them. Specifically, the aim
was to discover the needs of people over the age of 60, as
well as their attitudes and expectations regarding the
meeting of such needs. In order to achieve these aims,
data were gathered on socio-demographic variables, basic
needs, social network, future support expectations,
assessment of social services, cultural activities, social
image and attitudes and values.
Beliefs
and motivations of elderly people with regard to the
consumption of tobacco
This
research aims to shed light on the changing phase in which
elderly people find themselves regarding the consumption
of tobacco and analysing the beliefs and motivations
associated with each phase, as we as identify the
determinants of the transition between the changing
phases.
Psychological resistance in old age
This
work focuses on the reserve capacity that very old people
have to cope with the problems they face. The aims are to
identify the most important problems that very old people
have to deal with in everyday life, decide whether there
are differences in them depending on a person’s age, as
well as identify the more common strategies and ways of
coping regarding each type of problem and their
relationship with satisfaction with life in very old age.
