MASTER’S DEGREE IN GERONTOLOGY

UNIVERSITY OF SALAMANCA

The initial Master's Degree in Gerontology began in 1989 in Salamanca. It was the first Master's Degree in Gerontology to be introduced in Europe. This is an opportunity to study at the oldest university in Spain and on the pioneering Master’s Degree of its kind in Europe.

During their stay in Salamanca, US Intergero exchange students will receive theoretical and practical post-graduate training in Gerontology.

There is specific content that is deemed essential for the training of these students during their stay in Salamanca. Accordingly, in the event that their sojourn does not coincide with the formal teaching of these subjects, they are to be approached through individual study on the part of each student. The team responsible for the Master’s will provide the corresponding literature for the students’ self-study learning. The following are the core subjects in the training of international students:

- Geography of ageing in Spain

- Socio-health services in Spain

- Programme development and assessment

- Care systems in old age

- Quality of life in old age

- Intergenerational relations

- Preparing for retirement

- Older workers

- Carers for the elderly

- Work plan as a professional in training

The occupational training of Intergero students will involve an internship in a gerontology centre during their stay in Salamanca. They will be free from Mondays to Thursdays in order to attend the centres. The timetable will be arranged in accordance with the needs and availability of each gerontology centre. In order to achieve professional gerontology training, it is estimated that an average of 150 hours will have to be spent at such centres.

The individual study time required for following up and consolidating the theoretical classes and the internship is estimated to involve 200 hours of dedication per student.

Upon conclusion of their stay, each exchange student will draw up a final report that will cover their training experience at Salamanca University; integrating, synthesising and assessing the knowledge acquired from a comparative viewpoint regarding the situation in the United States.

Overall, the curriculum caters for approximately 500 hours of dedication to gerontology training.

The time left over during the stay may be devoted to language and cultural activities on the part of each exchange student.
