INTERGERO:
Implementation of an international interdisciplinary program for teaching Gerontology:   A Consortia Implementation Project

Project overview

The world's population is ageing at a rapid pace. An increasing number of specialists in gerontology will be required in order to respond to the needs arising from this unprecedented demographic change. The participating universities specialising in studies in gerontology need to work together to develop a new strategy that will help to instruct and train new professionals in gerontology throughout the world.

This project has been designed to develop a new common teaching curriculum that will comply with the system of credits in both the United States and the European Union. This new curriculum is to include a comparative view of socio-health services on an international basis, as well as specific teaching materials developed by the teaching staff involved. Each one of the consortium's member universities is to include the new curriculum in its offer of educational programmes and courses. The new curriculum is to be accessible for distance learning.

The institutions involved in the project plan to further the trans-Atlantic deployment of gerontology students. Sojourns averaging six months will enable students to perfect the language of the host country, familiarise themselves with different approaches to gerontology and acquire professional experience endorsed by placements in gerontology centres in each country.

The assessment of the project will comply with the standards and guidelines of AGHE (Association for Gerontology in Higher Education). The IAGG (International Association of Gerontology and Geriatric) supports the sustainability and dissemination of the project's activities and results. This project opens a new avenue of educational cooperation between the European Union and the United States in an emerging socio-economic issue of considerable significance.

Exchange of students and lecturers between EU-USA and duration of stay abroad

Three students from each university during the second year and four during the third year will spend a four-month period on a trans-Atlantic gerontology programme (a total of 21 in Europe and 21 in the USA).

There will also be an exchange involving 6 European lecturers and 6 US lecturers for a minimum period of two weeks.
